Nantucket (1958)
Occasional trips to New England provided Byron with fresh subject matter that was very, very different from scenes in New Orleans and southern Louisiana. This large painting of Nantucket was done on one such trip when Byron was in his mid-30s. The painting was evidently a family favorite — Byron’s mother (my grandmother) — had it framed and placed prominently in her house, where it remained for almost 50 years (Byron’s sister, my aunt, lived in the house, with the painting in the same spot, until Hurricane Katrina in 2005).
The painting is displayed here in its original frame and tarnished mat: a new owner should prepare it for the the wall of their own cherished family home (for the next 50 years) by replacing the frame and mat to their liking. We’ve priced this to encourage the next owner to have this done by professional framers.
